Green Dragons rout Jenkins 56-0 on Senior Night

The passing game from senior quarterback Ty Saragas and the running game by the Green Dragons were displayed all evening Friday as Harlan thrashed visiting Jenkins 56-0 on Senior Night at Joe Gilley Athletic Complex.
Harlan finished second in the district with a 2-1 mark and 5-4 overall going into the regular season finale at Corbin on Friday.
Hazard claimed the district title with a 28-22 win over host Pineville. The Mountain Lions claimed the third seed and Jenkins finished fourth.
Saragas, who also named Donell’s Pharmacy Player of the Game, completed 12 of 13 passes for 301 yards and three touchdowns.
“He was really sharp and threw the ball really well,” Harlan coach J.B. Donahue said of Saragas. “I thought he threw the ball crisp and took what was there tonight.”
Along with the passing numbers, the Green Dragons rushed the ball 28 times for 223 yards.
“That’s the balance we’re looking for,” said Donahue. “I know we can’t have those kind of numbers every week, but being able to run and throw the football makes you a lot tougher to defend.”
Senior Cody Logan led the rushing attack with 103 yards on eight carries. Senior Dakota Morris gained 47 yards on four rushes. Cale Brock added 26 yards on four carries.
The Dragons opened the scoring with a seven-play, 82-yard drive as Logan went in from the 8 at the 8:29 mark. Ryland Atkins added the extra points to make it 7-0.
It took Harlan just three plays to find the end zone three minutes later as Morris scored on a 12-yard run. Senior Tyler Sturdivant added the extra point.
Senior Demarcus Williams scored from the 1-yard line with 11:22 remaining in the first half. Morris scored the two-point conversion as Harlan led 22-0.
The scoring continued for the Dragons on their next possession as Saragas connected with Eric Young for a 47-yard touchdown pass at the 4:49 mark. Young’s kick was perfect.
Harlan added another score just before halftime as senior Dawson Charles caught a 17-yard pass from Saragas with 30 seconds left in the period. Atkins’ kick made it 36-0.
The Dragons needed only one play to score to begin the second half as Saragas found Young for a 58-yard TD pass. Atkins added the extra point.
The lead swelled to 50-0 at the 7:18 mark of the third quarter as Logan raced 23 yards. Sturdivant’s kick was good.
Harlan’s final touchdown came with 11:22 to play as Tanner Morris went in from the 9.
Atkins, Sturdivant and Young made six of seven extra points for the Dragons.
“It was a good night of kicking,” said Donahue. “We tried three different kids and I think they all three made one. Tyler (Sturdivant) is such a great kid. He never causes problems. We wanted to make sure he got in the game and did something positive.”
The Green Dragons wore pink to celebrate Cancer Awareness Month.
Jenkins was held to 74 total yards. The Cavaliers missed on all five passing attempts and gained 1 yard on the ground in the second half.
“I know they were undermanned and had some kids injured and coach (Eric) Ratliff had those kids playing really, really hard.”
Jenkins (4-5) will close the regular season next week at Betsy Layne.
