The Harlan County Black Bears returned from their trip to South Carolina with some hardware. Harlan held off the host Seahawks 54-47 in the championship game of the Hilton Head Classic on Sunday.
Senior Tyler Brewer had 25 points to lift the Bears to a win in the title game. Brewer turnede in a standout performance throughout the tournament and was named the event’s most valuable player. Fellow senior Alex Sergent was also named to the all-tournament team.
Brewer had 17 points in the first half to power Harlan County to a nine-point lead at the break. The Black Bears led by double-digits in the third quarter, but Hilton Head pulled to within six heading into the final period.
The Seahawks cut the deficit to five with less than a minute remaining, but Harlan County held on down the stretch.
Aaron Frazier led Hilton Head Island (5-5) with 18 points.
Harlan County knocked off Class A Power Whale Branch (S.C.) 82-77 in the opening round, before downing White Knoll (S.C.) 56-34 in the semifinals on Saturday.
The trip marked the Bears second straight appearance in the Hilton Head Classic. Harlan County County fell to Martinsburg (W.V.) in last year’s title game.
Harlan County (11-0) returns to action Thursday in the Pikeville Invitational Tournament. The Black Bears will meet 14th Region foe Breathitt County in the first round at 3 p.m.
