Back in business

Joe P. Asher

Staff Writer

Looking for a lawyer? Attorney Russell Alred has opened up shop in downtown Harlan and is taking clients in his new office in the old Howard Drug building located at 101 South Main Street.

Alred opened his office in December and is offering a wide variety of legal services.

“I do about everything,” said Alred.” I do criminal defense, domestic, all types of civil litigation. I do car wrecks, personal injury, Social Security disability, just about everything really, except bankruptcy.”

Alred has quite a bit of experience in several aspects of legal work.

“I have extensive experience in criminal defense, personal injury and civil litigation. Those areas I have a lot of experience in,” said Alred.

Alred said he is happy to be back to work.

“We’ve had a very good turnout,” said Alred. “We’ve been blessed with a lot of business. A lot of people have come by and we’ve been able to help a lot of people. It’s just a pleasure to be back to work with folks again. Our doors are always open. A lot of my old clients have come back, a lot of new ones have come to me. I look forward to putting my experience, expertise and dedication to work for them.”

Alred is currently operating the office by himself.

“I’m actually working by myself with a volunteer who’s training with me right now,” said Alred. “I’m getting back on my feet and haven’t hired anybody yet.”

Alred hopes to build his practice and hire some people.

“Eventually, it’s my goal to do what I was before,” said Alred. “I had four employees working for me at that time. I like small town practice. I’ll probably always be a solo practitioner, but I look forward to having as many as four of five staff working for me.”

Alred received his bachelor’s degree from Centre College in 1994, and completed his master’s at Eastern Kentucky University in 1995. He received a law degree from Salmon P. Chase College of Law in 1998, passing the bar on his first attempt. Alred has been admitted to practice in all Kentucky state courts as well as the Eastern Kentucky District Federal Court, Western Kentucky Federal Court, the 6th Circuit Court of Appeals and the United Stated Supreme Court.

History abounds at Oven Fork Mercantile
