Harlan County native and award-winning author George Ella Lyon will be the keynote speaker at an organ/piano concert and dinner on April 27 at Pine Mountain Settlement School (PMSS) commemorating the school’s centennial celebration.
“We are excited to have George Ella Lyon share in Pine Mountain Settlement School’s celebration of 100 years of service to the local community and areas beyond,” said Debra Callahan, PMSS operations manager, George Ella and Pine Mountain Settlement School are two examples of the rich heritage of Harlan County.”
Lyon is the author of four books of poetry, a novel, a memoir and a short story collection as well as 37 books for young readers. Her honors include an Al Smith Fellowship, fellowships to the Hambidge Center for the Arts, numerous grants fro the Kentucky Foundation for Women, a Pushcart Prize nomination and a feature in the PBS series: The United States of Poetry. Lyon works as a freelance writer and teacher based in Lexington.
“I’m working on a poem about Pine Mountain Settlement School, which touches on its history and my history with it since I have gone there all my life, and continue to go each summer to speak to the kids at Reading Camp,” said Lyon. “I’ll also read poems from Many-Storied House , a collection which is coming out from the University of Kentucky Press next fall. A family memoir in poems, which is set in the house where I grew up, a house my grandfather, Robert Hoskins, Sr., built for my parents when they married in 1941.”
