A Harlan man faces charges including theft after an alleged incident Wednesday afternoon. Michael North, 36, was arrested by Loyall Police Chief Mike Lunsford as a result of a call from LP Energy around 3:30 p.m.
“They said they had witnessed North had some items that were taken from the old LP Energy location in Baxter in the trunk of his car,” said Lunsford. “I had just seen (North’s) car parked up on Chad Street.”
Lunsford stated before he could go check on the car, he received a call stating that North was at Baxter Metal trying to sell some of the items alleged to be stolen. Upon arrival, Lunsford said he found the items in the trunk of North’s vehicle.
According to Lunsford, North said he thought the items were scrap.
Lunsford said Bryant Storie, a witness and employee of LP Energy, valued the property taken at over $2,500. Items included in the theft were assorted explosion proof switch boxes, a large three phase electrical meter starter, several pieces of rigid conduit, a round steel pipe and a steel angle iron.
North was lodged in the Harlan County Detention Center and charged with theft by unlawful taking, third-degree trespassing and second-degree criminal mischief.
Lunsford was assisted at the scene by Kentucky State Police Trooper Josh Brashears.
In other police news:
* Bobby Tyler Grubbs, 19, of Grays Knob, was arrested Tuesday by Kentucky State Police Trooper Danny Caudill on a charge of being absent without leave from the military. Grubbs was lodged in the Harlan County Detention Center;
* James Southard, 21, of Harlan, was arrested by Lunsford on Wednesday. Southard was charged with first-degree criminal mischief and lodged in the Harlan County Detention Center on a $1,500 full cash bond;
* Floyd Mitchell, 36, of Lexington, was arrested on Tuesday by the Harlan County Sheriff’s Office for a probation violation. Mitchell was lodged in the Harlan County Detention Center without bond.
