Tim’s Barber Shop opens in Harlan

Nola Sizemore

Tim’s Barber Shop has now opened in the Sunshine area of Harlan.

Owner Tim Howard said he will be spending most of his days cutting hair in his new shop located at 53 Middleton Street, two lanes on the right past the Harlan County Community Action Agency coming in from the Harlan exit and the third house on the left. A new roomy area with lots of seating, there is also plenty of parking available.

A graduate of Tri-State Institute of Hair Design in London, Howard said he took an interest in barbering in 2007, but wasn’t able to obtain his dream of owning his own business at that time.

“An opportunity arose in 2011 and I was able to pursue my dream of becoming a barber and owning my own business,” said Howard. “I’ve just been open two weeks and I’ve already seen a great response, for which I am grateful. I appreciate everyone who has stopped by and given me their support.”

The son of Rita Howard, long-time owner and operator of Rita’s Day Care in Sunshine, and the late Joe Howard, long-time constable in Harlan, Howard is excited to be able to offer his services to the people of Harlan County.

Haircuts for men and children cost $8 and he also offers a hot towel shave, which takes approximately 30 minutes to complete. It’s a lost art that many people do not do, Howard said.

Each cut takes about 12 to 18 minutes, and appointments can be made, but are not required. The shop’s hours are Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday 8 a.m. to noon. Closed on Sundays.

Howard and his wife, Alicia, reside in Harlan and have two children. You may reach Tim’s Barber Shop by calling 606-273-6038.
