The Harlan County Lady Bears were improved in the field, but were unable to generate any offense Friday in a 3-0 loss to Letcher Central.
“Our defense tightened up — that is a good thing. If we keep playing defense like we did tonight we will beat some teams,” said Harlan County coach Tim McElyea.
Letcher Central opened the scoring with one run in the third inning. The Lady Cougars added two more in the fourth inning.
Bridget Robinson provided the Lady Bears with two opportunities to get on the scoreboard. Robinson led off the fifth inning with a double. Farren Clark reached base in the following at-bat to advance Robinson to third. Letcher escaped the jam with an inning ending double-play.
Robinson reached on a dropped strike in the seventh inning. She advanced to third base on a hit from Clark. However, she was again stranded, as Letcher completed the shutout.
“We faced a pitcher with a good arm. When we hit it, we hit it right at them,” McElyea said. “Letcher is a good defensive team. We were competitive. We just have to cut down on some mistakes and things will get better.”
Clark had a double and a single to lead Harlan County at the plate. Robinson added a double, while Harris contributed a single.
Katie Johnson struck out six batters and allowed just four hits in a complete-game effort on the mound.
Harlan County (3-6) returns to action Monday at Bell County. Letcher Central (2-5) will travel to Harlan today.
