Space painting more than a hobby for HCHS student
by Ann Robinson

Many people find it relaxing to have a hobby in which they can escape the every day pressures of life and “lose themselves” just long enough to find something they can all their own. However, one young Harlan Countian says he has not only found a hobby, but an interest that he hopes to add to his future educational pursuits.

Jase Perkins, of Totz, said he found what is known as “space painting” on a tutorial video on the YouTube website several months ago, and has since become fascinated with the art of painting pictures with spray paint.

The Harlan County High School sophomore said that he has always enjoyed the art of painting since his early childhood, and attributes a huge part of his passion for art to his first art teacher Barbara Wills when he attended the Harlan County Christian School during his elementary school years.

He said it was in recent months that he has taken the interest of painting to even greater heights with spray painting.

“I have always loved art and painting since I was a very young child,” said Perkins. “Then one day I was on YouTube and I came across a tutorial by Brandon McConnel that demonstrated how to paint with spray paint. I thought it was awesome and I began trying it.”

Perkins said many of his paintings of clouds, water, mountains, trees, and other scenery can take anywhere from five minutes to 35 minutes to complete, depending on what type of painting he is working with and are done on poster board.

Dorena Perkins said she is very proud of her only son for his beautiful creations of what she referred to as “a poor man’s art,” and that she encourages him to pursue colleges that offer arts in the curriculum.

“He (Jase) has always shown a great talent and interest for art and painting,” she said. “We are very encouraging of him to pursue it as he enters college.”

Perkins said the space painting has become a very huge part of his artistic work and that he does plan to pursue a future that includes the painting in some way.

“It being spray paint that I use, I have to do most all my work outdoors. So, when the outside temperatures are warmer is when I do most of my work,” said Perkins, adding it is a wonderful way to fill his time.

Perkins said he gets a lot of encouragement from his family, friends and teachers concerning his love for art. He attributes a lot of his inspiration from his current HCHS art teacher Pam Hoskins.

“Everyone seems to be very supportive of me and my love of art and it helps when the people around you are supportive in what you do,” said Perkins.
