Receiving only $200 for PRIDE Spring Cleanup this year, Mayor Eddie Manning recently told members of the Evarts City Council “not a lot can be done with that small amount of money.” In recent years the week-long cleanup has cost the city between $2,800 to $3,200.
“The PRIDE program has really been cut this year,” said city clerk Kristi Lamb. “Other cities have a lot more road miles than we do and you get money based on the total amount of road miles cleaned. The city of Evarts has only 10 miles total.”
Lamb said at a meeting she attended she was told the city can give the $200 to the county and join in their PRIDE event.
“We have $1,000 left in our PRIDE account from previous years, which we can put with our $200 this year,” said Lamb. “That will pay for one roll-off container. We’ll just try to do the best we can with what we have.”
City maintenance supervisor Cledo Powers said one roll-off container can be filled in one day.
After talking to county officials, the city decided to host their own PRIDE event, which will be held April 8 through April 12 from 12:30 p.m. until 4:30 p.m. There will be no home pickups this year. Drop-offs will be received at Giona Town behind Dairy Hut. The cleanup and drop offs are limited to city residents only.
“PRIDE officials are pushing to do away with home pickups and making their annual cleanup a drop-off event only,” said Lamb.
In other council action:
*Accepted a bid from Junior Perry, of Baileys Creek, in the amount of $501 for a fire tanker truck the city had declared surplus;
*Approved an action to take offers on a surplussed roller vehicle with a minimum offer of $500. The surplussed pickup truck was tabled until Upper Clover Fork Fire Department has a chance to make an offer;
*Chief of Police Lupe Blas said his department will begin enforcing the city’s animal lease law and citing owners for violations after a recent incident of a large dog injuring another smaller animal;
*Mayor told council members work has started on new sidewalks in the city and the city hall’s new roof is completed;
*Hired Blake Middleton for part-time seasonal work.
