Man indicted for assault on mother
by Joe Asher
Staff Writer

An alleged incident of a man hitting his mother with a stereo in February has resulted in the indictment of a Harlan man. Ashton Britt, 20, was served with an indictment warrant by Harlan City Police Officer Britt Ross on Tuesday.

According to the indictment, on Feb. 8 Ashton Britt intentionally caused physical injury to Tina Britt by means of a deadly weapon or dangerous instrument.

Previous Enterprise reports show Harlan City Police Cpl. Jeff Owens arrested him on Feb. 8 after he and Officer Will Pope responded to a report of a domestic disturbance.

“We received a complaint of a domestic in progress at apartment 204 at Buttermore Apartments,” said Owens at the time. “Upon arrival we went into the apartment and located Tina Britt. She was laying in the floor bleeding from a laceration in her head and possibly having a broken arm. We called an ambulance right away.”

Tina Britt is Ashton Britt’s mother.

The citation issued to Ashton Britt at the time of his arrest states that Tina Britt told police she had gotten into an argument with her son. Ashton Britt then allegedly hit Tina Britt with a stereo. Ashton Britt was located by Owens and Harlan County Sheriff’s Chief Deputy Winston Yeary hiding under a ladder on the roof of the Buttermoore Apartment building, where the incident allegedly occurred.

An indictment was handed down by the grand jury on April 29, charging Ashton Britt with second-degree assault and menacing.

The case was investigated by Owens.

Ashton Britt was lodged in the Harlan County Detention Center on a $2,500 full cash bond.

In other police news, Donnie Hughes, 57, of Evarts, was arrested Wednesday by Evarts Police Officer William Clogston on charges of alcohol intoxication in a public place, second-degree criminal mischief, second-degree disorderly conduct, third-degree assault and resisting arrest.

Hughes was lodged in the Harlan County Detention Center.
