An Enterprise Staff Report

Harlan coach Derrick Alak knew his team would take a few lumps this season after losing the bulk of last year’s roster to graduation. Fresh off of an upset victory over North Laurel, the young Lady Dragons struggled on Monday as they fell 70-33 at 13th Region power Clay County.

“Clay was a lot more experienced, bigger and stronger than we were,” Akal said. “The girls done the best they could and played hard, so I am proud of them. I thought they gave it everything they had, we just played a really good team.”

Clay’s standout duo of Cheyenne Madden and Morgan Chesnut combined for 21 points in the paint in the first quarter as the Lady Tigers jumped out to a 25-11 lead after one. Madden led Clay County with 20 points, while Chesnut added 17.

“Madden is arguably the best player in region,” Akal said. “It was a good experience for the girls.”

The Lady Tigers outscored Harlan 18-8 in the second quarter to pull away for a 43-19 lead at the half, before cruising in the final two quarters.

“Clay County’s pressure bothered us. The girls fought so hard to win at North Laurel, I think they were a little fatigued,” Akal said. “It is tough to win on the road at Clay County. A lot of teams go in their and get the same treatment.”
