Police: Pawn shop robbery a false report
by Joe P. Asher
Staff Writer

A Harlan man has been arrested in connection with thefts that occurred at V and J Pawn in downtown Harlan beginning in January.

Price Tony Arwood, 47, was arrested Monday by Harlan City Police Officer Derrick Noe.

According to Harlan City Police Chief Mike Thomas, officers searched Arwood’s residence following a series of robbery, theft and burglary complaints from the pawn shop.

“Since January, there have been multiple reports from the pawn shop of stolen money, guns and merchandise,” said Thomas. “The robbery couldn’t be verified by any other witnesses in the area and Arwood would never identify a suspect that matched the description he gave us.”

According to Thomas, investigations additionally indicate Arwood failed to do the proper paperwork verifying approximately 13 firearms had been claimed by their owners and did not remit these payments to the pawn shop.

Thomas said at this time approximately four of the gun owners have been contacted and have confirmed they paid the guns out of pawn.

A previous Enterprise report states a store clerk reported that a white male came into the business, brandished a gun and demanded money.

“The clerk said the perpetrator fled the store with money and was walking south on Main Street,” Noe said in an earlier report. “We talked to several people that were near the store when we got there, but they said they didn’t see anything.”

Thomas said another burglary was reported that could not be verified and appeared to be staged.

The case is under investigation by Noe. Additional charges are pending.

Noe was assisted by Thomas and Officers Hunter Luttrell, Matt Cope and Sgt. George Young.

Arwood was charged with falsely reporting an incident, tampering with physical evidence, theft by unlawful taking and theft by unlawful taking of a firearm.

Arwood was lodged in the Harlan County Detention Center on a $20,000 full cash bond.

In other police activity:

* Joshua Mendoza, 29, of Cumberland, was arrested by Harlan County Sheriff’s Chief Deputy Winston Yeary on Tuesday and charged with second-degree criminal possession of a forged instrument. Mendoza was lodged in the Harlan County Detention Center;

* Rostin Bray III, 36, of Cawood, was arrested by Harlan City Police Sgt. George Young on Tuesday on charges of theft of a prescription blank and first-degree promoting contraband. Bray was lodged in the Harlan County Detention Center on a $5,000 full cash bond.
