The Harlan offense supplied plenty of firepower Tuesday. However, it wasn’t enough to overcome an offensive outburst from visiting Cumberland Gap, Tenn., as the Lady Dragons fell 16-10.

Harlan took control early with four runs in the second inning.

Heather Holland reached base on a walk. Torri Mitchell drove in the run with a single. Madison Brewer followed with a single, and Jourdan Ledford made it 3-0 with another base hit. Ledford scored the final run of the inning when Alyssa Mills put down a sacrifice bunt.

Cumberland Gap took the lead with a five-run third inning, before Harlan tied it at five with a run in the bottom of the inning.

Kaylee McNiel started the offense with a single. Mitchell advanced the runner to third with a triple. McNiel later scored on a sacrifice bunt from Brewer.

Cumberland Gap regained the lead with three runs in the fourth inning. However, the Lady Dragons answered again — this time with two runs in the bottom of the inning.

Kaitlyn Jenkins reached on a walk. Madison Noe followed with a double. Anna Karst drove in the first run of the inning with a single. Noe later scored when McNiel delivered a double.

Cumberland Gap took control with an offensive outburst in the fifth inning. The Lady Panthers reeled off seven runs in the inning to take a 15-7 advantage.

Harlan responded with a run in the bottom of the inning.

Mitchell advanced to first with a single. She stole second and third base and scored when Ledford hit into a fielder’s choice.

The Lady Dragons closed the gap to 15-10 with two more runs in the sixth inning.

Karst doubled. McNiel drove in the runner with a single. Mitchell also singled to bring home McNiel.

The Lady Dragons were unable to get any closer in the seventh inning.

Mitchell had a double and three singles to power the Lady Dragons. Noe delivered two doubles and a single. McNiel recorded a double and two singles. Karst contributed a triple and a single, while Brewer and Ledford each had a single.

“We are starting to see the ball pretty good. We are straightening out some of our swings,” said Harlan coach Scott Lewis.

Brewer recorded two strikeouts, while scattering seven hits in the complete-game loss in the start. Noe struck out two batters in relief.

Harlan (10-11) returns to action today at home against Knox Central.
