A shooting that occurred on Redwing Road in Tremont on Wednesday is under investigation by the Kentucky State Police.
KSP Public Affairs Officer Shane Jacobs said troopers responded to the scene where a man was shot in the parking lot behind the Pine Flat Baptist Church.
Jacobs said the preliminary investigation indicated that Clifford Napier, 59, of Tremont, was shot multiple times in the parking lot.
Boss Saylor, 75, of Tremont, was arrested and charged with first-degree assault, attempted murder and tampering with physical evidence.
Napier received medical treatment at the scene by Johnson’s LifeCare. He was then airlifted from U.S. 119 where the Wallins Volunteer Fire Department had placed a landing zone.
According to a family member, Napier is in ICU at Holston Valley Medical Center in Kingsport, Tenn., following surgery. Family said he was awake and was able to talk to them.
Napier, well known in the Harlan area, has been an employee at Goodwill in Harlan for 13 years, according to a store employee. His residence is located beside the Pine Flat Baptist Church. Saylor’s residence is located across the swinging bridge near the church.
A motive for the shooting had not been determined late Wednesday. The incident remains under investigation by Det. Kenny Abner.
KSP Lt. Ryan Catron, Sgt. Jackie Pickrell, troopers Jimmy Halcomb, Josh Brashears, James Earl Hensley and Jared Boggs and Det. Michael Cornett assisted at the scene. The Harlan County Sheriff’s Office also assisted.
