An Enterprise Staff Report

The Harlan Green Dragons captured their second straight Cumberland River All “A” Conference Tournament seventh- and eighth-grade championship with a pair of impressive wins last weekend. The Dragons pulled away in the second half for a 43-22 victory over Barbourville in the title game.

“I am really proud to be their coach. They are everything a coach wants his team to be on and off the court, and they deserve all of the success they have achieved over the past four years,” said Harlan coach Lonnie Huff. “This is the most successful group of players to come through Harlan Middle in over 15 years. What makes them so special is their unique talents that have formed into a great unit.”

The Green Dragons led by just five at the half before turning in a dominant performance in the final two periods. Harlan (16-0) outscored Barbourville 23-11 in the third and fourth quarter to pull away for the win.

“We have been on a roll coming into the tournament and we were able to keep that momentum going throughout. It’s been about pressure with our defense and offense,” Huff said.

Cameron Carmical hit seven-of-10 shots from the field to finish with 19 points in the championship contest. Carmical also led Harlan with four assists and three steals. Noah Busroe grabbed nine rebounds to power Harlan on the glass.

Harlan quickly shook off a slow start to down Pineville 54-23 in the semifinal contest.

The Green Dragons fell behind early, trailing 12-4 after the first quarter. However, Harlan responded by recording a shutout in the second period to take a 22-12 lead into the half.

The Dragons continued to pull away throughout the second half, outscoring Pineville 32-11 in the third and fourth quarter.

“Our defense in the two tournament games was really solid. We used pressure defense to force Pineville and Barbourville to play faster than what they wanted to, so they could never get comfortable with their offense,” Huff said. “When we were on offense we put pressure on them by attacking and creating for each other.”

Busroe had 16 points to pace Harlan against the Mountain Lions. Devon Foster added 12 points and 11 rebounds, while Tanner Parks recorded 10 points. Carmical led Harlan with six assists and three steals.

Barbourville knocked off Lynn Camp 45-20 to advance to the title game.

Pineville edged Williamsburg 40-36 in the opening round, while Middlesboro defeated Lynn Camp 42-38.
