An Enterprise Staff Report

The Lady Dragons won two of three to turn in a solid showing at the Mustang Christmas Tournament in Muhlenberg County recently.

The Lady Dragons knocked of 6A foe George Rodgers Clark in the final contest on Saturday.

Harlan trailed by three the break, but outscored the Lady Cardinals by 16 in the second half to pull away for the win.

“I think we defended the ball well. We didn’t rebound the ball as well as I would like, but I think we defended well in the half-court. That gave us an opportunity to stay in most of the games,” said Harlan coach Derrick Akal.

Junior Jourdan Ledford had 21 points in the contest to power the Lady Dragons. Ledford turned in a stellar tournament, with 46 points in the three games.

“Jourdan had to play some points guard in this tournament. She did an excellent job,” said Akal. “She has always been an excellent defender, but she attacked the rim and had an excellent tournament. I am proud of Jourdan.”

Harlan fell 48-32 to the host Lady Mustangs in the second round.

After taking a 10-7 lead after the opening period, Harlan trailed by just one at the half before fading in the final two quarters.

The Lady Dragons were outscored 32-17 in the second half as Muhlenberg pulled away.

“There are times when we show inexperience. When you start two freshman and two sophomores you expect that though,” Akal said. “There are signs that we can be a really good team when we play together.”

Torri Mitchell’s 13 points led Harlan in the loss.

Harlan opened tournament play with a 50-48 victory over Caldwell County.

The Lady Dragons trailed by four after the opening period, but outscores Caldwell County 14-10 in the second quarter to take a tie into the half.

Harlan controlled the game to open the second half. The Lady Dragons outscored the Lady Tigers 15-6 i the third quarter to take a nine-point lead into the final period.

“They are resilient and will fight even when they are down. We got down by two at the end of the game and Katie King took a huge charge and Jordan Brock hit a big shot to put us up by two,” Akal said. “I was impressed by our defense and how we held on at the end. Emma Bianchi had five blocks that game so young players stepped up.”

Ledford had 19 points to pace the Lady Dragons in the win.

Harlan (5-4) returns to action on Dec. 27 in the Candy Cane Classic at South Laurel.
