‘Taps’ never fails to send chills
During the recent Memorial Day holiday, I heard the plaintive refrain of “Taps” played during the televised ceremony at Arlington Cemetery. Like the “Star Spangled Banner” and “My Old Kentucky Home,” it is one of the melodies which never fails to send chills up my spine. On all military bases at home and abroad, when night descends and it is time for “lights out,” a bugler sounds “Taps,” a haunting call signaling the end of the soldiers’ day....

Save Money: Reduce food waste
As we scrape uneaten food into the trash can after dinner every night or throw away moldy bread that we just didn’t get around to eating, many of us don’t see that wasted food as wasted money. But in fact, that’s just what it is. The U.S. Department of Agriculture recently reported that the amount of uneaten food in American homes and restaurants in 2008 was about $390 in wasted food per each U.S. consumer. This is more than the average Ameri...

Be ready for photo opportunities
Most of the time at sunset and in the early morning fog when the light is just perfect, Loretta and I have cameras handier that most cops have side arms at the ready. You just never know when you‘re going to need or have the opportunity to shoot something. In our case it’s opportunity and we know that most law enforcement officers don’t ever want to pull their guns and only do so when the need arises. But we love to be ready to pull our camer...

Be prepared for the unexpected
Remember how when you were young your mother would say, “Always make sure you wear good underwear. You never know what might happen…” I’m beginning to think it is a good idea to carry an overnight bag in the car at all times. Include in it extra underwear, toiletries, pajamas and a complete change of clothing appropriate for the season. It’s hard to say what each of our future holds, but it is fairly certain to say that all of us have some su...

Poke festival a Harlan County tradition
This week, local folks will converge on downtown Harlan for the Poke Sallet Festival. Like Jack’s beanstalk, which grew and grew from a single seed, Harlan County’s annual festival has grown enormously from a single “seed” of an idea planted back in 1955. Back then, the late Drew Smith owned and operated Martin’s Fork Road Market and Garage. Drew’s wife ran a short order restaurant in the same building located at the forks of the road right a...

Controlling weeds, soil compaction
Home gardeners are now looking forward to that first ripe tomato or ear of corn picked from their own carefully tended gardens. But after some vigorous hoeing on a hot humid day, some may be asking themselves if it is all worth it. Weeds compete with crop plants for water, nutrients and sunlight. Some weeds can chemically inhibit vegetable plant growth. Others host insect pests and pathogens. All of these result in fewer fresh vegetables for ...

Medicine commercials are plentiful
If you watch television at all, say 15 minutes a day, chances are good that you’ve seen a commercial for at least one prescription pharmaceutical or another. I’m not going to mention any specific brand names in this column, other than the fictional ones that I make up as I go along. I figure that if the real companies have enough money to purchase network advertising, they also have enough to sue me. The most famous and successful of these d...

Searching for long lost friends
Before the years of Facebook and Google, trying to locate people from the past could be quite a daunting task. Even with those tools I have found some people to quite elusive. I heard from a cousin in another part of the country who had been looking for a long lost sweetheart. She said that she had tried to find him again a few years after high school, to see what had happened to him and renew the friendship. She tried the last address she ha...

Less time-consuming to buy produce
Loretta and I had decided that we didn’t need to grow any cabbage in the garden this year. She has discovered some kind of brought-on kraut that you can find in most grocery stores for about a dollar a quart and you sure can’t make it for that if you believe your time is money. Plus, you can buy fresh cabbage for less than a dollar a head when it’s in season but you still have to pay 50 cents apiece for transplants unless you raised your own,...

Retirement dinner makes it official
At the end of every school year, most school years have a faculty luncheon and retirement event for the people who have retired that year. Year after year I have attended and bid good luck and farewell to those who were retiring from their teaching career at Wallins Elementary School. This year, Mary Lou Howard and I were the ones turning in our goodbyes. I had done my crying already. I was all cried out. So, I wasn’t afraid of crying in fron...

Crider brings drama back to HHS
Drama is alive and well at Harlan High School thanks to Kevn Crider. He and his ‘Dragon Drama’ students did themselves proud recently by presenting the well-known comedy Greater Tuna. The play was originally designed for only two actors to play the entire cast of over 20 eccentric characters of both genders and various ages; however, it also lends itself to accommodating each of the aforementioned roles individually. Crider chose to use the la...

Don’t break the bank, stay cool
With the days finally getting warmer, many of us are looking forward to summertime and making plans for all of the activities we want to do and events we want to attend. Summer can be a lot of fun, but many summertime adventures can also be expensive. Preparing now for summertime expenses can help soften the blow to your wallet. Many people do not include summertime expenses, such as vacations, concerts, summer camps, trips to the pool and go...
