A native of Ages, he was a retired from General Motors Corporation and a retired coal miner. He was a veteran of the U. S. Army having served in World War II and was recently honored in the WWII Veterans Graduation & Recognition Program. He was a member of the American Legion, the V.F.W. and was a Kentucky Colonel.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia Morland Burkhart, his mother Mary Whitehead Burkhart; and his father, Henry L. Burkhart.
Survivors include two stepchildren: Sam Mills and wife, Charlsie, Evarts; and Edith Frazier, Dayton, Ohio; two sisters: Sarah Ellen Shoffner and her husband, Donald, Toledo, Ohio; and Frankie Martin, Abingdon, Va.; seven stepgrandchildren including Sam Mills Jr., Evarts; Linda Thomas, Scottsburg, Ind; and Virginia Skidmore, Mount Pleasant, S.C.; 16 step-great-grandchildren, and two step-great-great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held today from 5 to 9 p.m. at the Evarts Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday at 1 p.m. in the chapel of the funeral home with the Rev. Richard Flatt officiating.
Burial will follow in Evarts Memorial Gardens.
Harvey Napier, Jack Brewer, Johnny Bryant, Bill Ireton, Lonnie Burkhart, Clark Daniels and Sammy Mills Jr. will serve as pallbearers.
