Margaret Davies Slusher, 70, Middlesboro, died May 15, 2003, at Baptist Hospital in Knoxville, Tenn.

A native of Harlan County, Slusher was a member of the First Baptist Church of Middlesboro where she was an active deacon and church leader for many years. She was a former teacher for both the Middlesboro and Bell County public schools. She was an active member and leader of the Middlesboro and Bell County retired teachers association. She was a former member of the Middlesboro Music Club, Homemakers Club, Cumberland Park Garden Club and contributed actively to her community.

She is preceded in death by her parents, D.L. and Io Davies; her sister-in-law and two brothers-in-law, Hazel Slusher Lair and honorable Judge Paul P. Lair, and Onley Arnett.

Survivors include her husband, Ike Slusher, Middlesboro; two brothers and two sisters-in-law: William Edwin and Sue Davis, Lake Jackson, Texas; and David L. Davies, Harlan, and Ruth Arnett, Murfreesboro, Tenn.; four daughters: Deborah Slusher, Louisville; Virginia Martin and husband, Steve, Middlesboro; Sarah Ausmus and husband, Jeff, Anchorage; and Jane L. Paynter and husband, Charles, Danville; nine grandchildren: Sarah J, C.J., and Martin Ausmus; Lauren, Kristan and Meghan Paynter; Amy and Alice Moore and Jacob Martin; special nieces and nephews: Henry B. and Donna Sandridge and children, Greg and Jeana, Rockvale, Tenn.; the honorable John Lair and wife, Peggy, and their children: Trevor and Traci Beth, Cynthiana; Drew and Debbie Davies and daughter, Andrea, Mesquite, Texas; Mark Davies, Dallas; and Danna and Darren Miller, The Coloney, Texas; and several cousins and other relatives and friends.

Visitation is Monday from 6 to 8 p.m. at First Baptist Church in Middlesboro.

Funeral services will be conducted Monday at 8 p.m. at the church with Dr. Chuck Summers and the Rev. Stephen Earle officiating.

Graveside services will be conduced Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Greenhill Memorial Cemetery in Middlesboro.

Pallbearers will be the deacons of the First Baptist Church.
