Cleanup of houses is sought by council

After encountering success and drawing criticism for its recent efforts to make businesses clean up, the Cumberland City Council has decided to take the same action with the city's residents.

The council scheduled an Aug. 19 bus tour of the city's neighborhoods, during which council members will take note of houses in need of cleaning up. A similar tour was taken earlier this summer of the city's commercial areas, resulting in public nuisance ordinances being issued against several area businesses.

Most council members were in favor of the residential tour, but councilwoman Loretta Cornett was steadfastly opposed.

"I have a problem with that. I really do," she said. "We've got other things to work on. We need to be trying to get grocery stores and shoe stores and clothing stores in here. You're not going to get me to go into a residential area."

Mayor Jeff Harrison tried to assure Cornett that the council had no plans to pick on anyone.

"We're not talking about houses with some toys in the yard. We're talking about structures that are falling in, and trash piled up."
