Gymnasium named in honor of Wallins coach, volunteer

A local legend was remembered Monday at Wallins Elementary School.

Billy Joe Simpson, a Wallins fixture who volunteered at the school and its sports program for more than 40 years, died June 27. On Monday, school and county officials held a dedication ceremony to rename the school's gym in honor of Simpson.

Harlan County District 5 Magistrate Jim Roark, a former teacher and coach at Wallins, had a close relationship with Simpson.
