The Evarts Lady Cats picked up their first win of the season in style Tuesday at Barbourville.
The Lady Cats set three state records as they crushed the host Lady Tigers 46-15 in a five-inning affair.
Amazingly, Evarts connected for just 21 hits in the game. The Lady Cats were greatly aided by a record 32 walks. The teams combined for an amazing 50 walks.
Other marks set in the game were: most runs by one team (breaking North Laurel's record of 35, set in 1998) and by both teams (shattering the old record of 46, set by Burgin and Harrodsburg in 2002).
The Lady Cats took an early 14-4 lead and were ahead 20-15 before opening the floodgates in the fifth inning. Evarts scored an astonishing 26 runs in the frame, falling just one run short of tying another state record.
Junior Amy Baird led the Lady Cats at the plate, going 3-for-3 with an inside-the-park grand slam, nine RBI and six runs scored. Senior Erika McCreary also went 3-for-3, scoring six runs and driving in eight.
Whitney Reynolds and J.J. Wallace each added a triple and two singles for Evarts (1-5), and Kathleen Braithwaite singled three times.
Reva Wynn and Allison Robbins each singled twice, and Amber Skidmore and Ashton Napier also added singles.
Wallace earned the win for the Lady Cats, pitching the first two innings as well as the final three.
