Local author Melissa Dean, of Evarts, recently published "Number 2 But Not in 2nd Place; Making the Most of Your Second Chances" by Xulon Press.

The book, inspired by events in her own life, is intended to reveal hope to those who have endured the "hard knocks" life sometimes deals.

Crossing all barriers, the book encourages each of us to make the most of today and the second chances we have been afforded.

Dean, a harmony vocalist and manager, has only recently started singing and traveling with her family. Recording her first project this year has been an enjoyable experience for Dean.

Dean graduated from Evarts High School and Southeast Community College. She is employed as a registered nurse with Mountain Heritage Hospice in Harlan. She works as needed with Appalachian Regional Hospital Home Health as well.

"I want to help any way I can," said Dean. "Sometimes all people need to know is that somebody is concerned for what they are going through."

Dean has hosted a weekly radio program with Harlan radio station WFSR for over a year. "Women with Purpose" airs live every Friday from 8:30 to 9 a.m.

Speaking to women's groups, writing a book and scheduling concert dates keep her busy.

She is married and the mother of two children, Jerie Johanna and James Isaac.

Her plans for the future include more ministry work, including writing more books.

"I just want people to know there's hope for their situation," said Dean. "Just because it seems bad doesn't mean it's over. There's a plan for your life."
