The Cumberland Lady Skins overcame deficits in both games Tuesday as they claimed a 28-26, 25-19 victory over host Evarts in volleyball action.
Senior Ashley Creech was instrumental in both comeback efforts as she served the Lady Skins back into the lead. In the first game, she served three aces in a row, and in the second she served up nine consecutive points for the Lady Skins.
The win gave Cumberland (8-2 overall, 5-0 district) a season sweep of the Lady Cats, who beat the Lady Skins in last year's district championship game.
Junior Amber Maggard contributed strong net play for the Lady Skins and served the winning point.
Junior Amy Baird led the Lady Cats with 15 points, including seven kills. Joanna Buress added nine points, including three kills. Michelle Helton and Brittany Cornett each scored seven points.
The Lady Skins return to action Thursday at Bell County, while Evarts (4-3 overall, 0-2 district) will travel to Harlan.
Cumberland won the junior varsity match 21-13, 21-8. Erika Letanosky scored two aces, and Ashley Reynolds and Shawna Short each scored one.
In previously unreported action, the Lady Cats fell to visiting Middlesboro 25-22, 25-18 on Monday. The defeat snapped a four-match winning streak by Evarts.
Cawood knocks off Jackson County
They drove three hours to do it, but the Cawood Trojanettes picked up their first win of the year with a 25-17, 16-25, 25-18 victory over host Jackson County.
Amanda Wright scored 14 service points to lead Cawood (1-3). Charlene Drew added seven kills.
The Trojanettes claimed a 21-16, 21-6 victory in the junior varsity match.
Amy Pace closed out the match with seven straight service points for Cawood (3-1).
The Trojanettes return to action Thursday at Middlesboro.
