The ceremony will mark the official grand opening of the center. Although the center will have already hosted some events, board members wanted to do something special and show what type of services the center will provide to the community.
The Harlan Center has already scheduled a lot of events for October, November and December.
Finishing touches are being done in and around the building daily. Karen Phillips said a contractor will be in to put up new light poles and lights on the streets surrounding the center.
She also told the commission all the furnishings that have been ordered up to this point have been delivered and the landscaping outside had been completed.
In other business, the commission:
n appointed a committee to find out if it would be more feasible to purchase a washer and dryer or contract a laundry service to wash the table linens at the center.
n appointed a committee to come up with operating policies and procedures for the center.
n voted to purchase liability insurance on the center from Travelers Insurance Company.
n voted to charge the same price for non-profit organizations as well as private companies and individuals who wish to rent the center to host an event.
n heard from Robert Gipe, director of the Appalachian program at Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical College, about putting some type of art on the wall that faces the street. The commission decided to allow Gipe to gather information and present a program at next month's meeting.
n voted to put up a Christmas tree and wreaths during the holidays.
n approved minutes from the last meeting.
n approved the treasurer's report.
