Autumn is a bittersweet time for avid Harlan County gardener Betty Joe Shepherd.

For one who values the land, fall is a time to appreciate nature's beauty, but it also marks the end of the planting and growing season.

Neatly gathered fodder shocks are the only reminders that only weeks ago towering corn stalks grew on valley farms, soaking in the summer sunshine. Now, the only things growing on the vine are a few plump pumpkins and gourds.

Gardening is in Betty Jo Shepherd's blood. Just as deep as her Pine Mountain roots is her love for working the land and watching things grow.
