Rosspoint captures regional Governor's Cup title

The Rosspoint Elementary School academic team placed first in district and regional Governor's Cup competitions for middle school students.

Rosspoint won with a total score of 62 in the district competition. Evarts finished second with 34 points. Hall had 21 points and Black Mountain finished with six points.

After winning in the district, Rosspoint competed on the regional level, which includes schools in Harlan and Bell counties.

The results came in Monday and Rosspoint won for the second year in a row with 27 points. Right Fork placed second with 23 points. Harlan placed third with 18 points. Cumberland placed fourth with 10 points. Bell Central was fifth with nine points. Page was sixth with nine points. Evarts was seventh with nine points. Middlesboro placed eighth with 6.5 points. Pineville was ninth with six points. Yellow Creek placed 10th with four points. Wallins was 11th with 2.5 points. Black Mountain and Hall also competed.

In the district competition, the top five in each category included:

Mathematics assessment: Kristin Begley, first place, Evarts; Jason Bolin, second place, Rosspoint; Bradley Thomas, third place, Rosspoint; Sam Stallard, fourth place, Evarts; and Michael Belcher, fifth place, Rosspoint.

Social studies assessment: Philip Ely, first place, Hall; Andrew Ball, second place, Evarts; Steven Miller, third place, Rosspoint; Josh Garrett, fourth place, Rosspoint; and Cory Lowe, fifth place, Hall.

Science assessment: Matthew Messer, first place, Rosspoint; Kristin Begley, second place, Evarts; Seth Napier; third place, Evarts; Cory Lowe, fourth place, Hall; and Dustin Campbell, fifth place, Black Mountain.

Language arts assessment: Chelsea Burchfield, first place, Rosspoint; Kristie Williams, second place, Rosspoint; Franchesca Jones, third place, Hall; Katie Hatfield, fourth place, Rosspoint; and Hayley Helton, fifth place, Black Mountain.

Composition: Samantha Brock, first place, Rosspoint; Danielle Middleton, second place, Evarts; Erica Sergent, third place, Rosspoint; Franchesca Jones, fourth place, Hall; and Samantha Stanton, fifth place, Black Mountain.

Arts & humanities assessment: Kristie Williams, first place, Rosspoint; Courtney Adams, second place, Rosspoint; Kattie Clark, third place, Evarts; Nick Morris, fourth place, Black Mountain; and Kelsey Penix, fifth place, Evarts.

In the problem solving team category, Rosspoint placed first, followed by Evarts and Hall.

In the quick recall team category, Rosspoint placed first, followed by Hall, Evarts and Black Mountain.
