An Enterprise Staff Report

Kentucky State Police are investigating the death of a newborn baby found at a Harlan County residence Tuesday.

According to a statement from the state police, KSP Det. Mike Cornett responded to a call concerning a possibly abandoned infant at a residence in Harlan's Pope Hill.

After an investigation, a dead newborn was found at the home. The baby was a boy.

Police believe the infant was less than a day old at the time of his death.

The names of the people occupying the Pope Hill home have not been released.

The infant was pronounced dead at the scene by Harlan County Deputy Coroner Gerald Scott.

The body has been sent to the Kentucky State Police Crime Lab in Frankfort for an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.

No other information concerning the baby was available. The case is still under investigation by Cornett, who was assisted at the scene by KSP Lt. Bobby Johnson and troopers Van Wright, Rob Farley and Keith Saylor.
