An Enterprise Staff Report

Three people injured in a two-ATV collision Saturday remain in critical condition at Holston Valley Medical Center.

Connie Day, Donnie Day and Arcelia Bowman were listed in critical condition three days after the accident. Connie and Donnie Day's injuries included severe head injuries, and Donnie Day has a broken jaw. Bowman's injuries have not been released.

David Bowman, a fourth person involved in the accident, is not hospitalized.

The four people were riding two separate ATVs on the Black Mountain Recreational Park on Saturday morning. The accident happened on "the washboard," an intermediate trail. The ATVs collided head-on, according to police.

Evarts City Police officer Mike Boggs said he suspects speed was a factor in the accident.

None of the riders were wearing helmets, which are required by Kentucky state law and the recreational park rules.

The victims were stabilized by workers from the Harlan County Rescue Squad, Harlan EMS and LifeCare before being transported by two helicopters which landed directly on the park in a large open area known as "the stadium," and a third which landed at the Evarts High School football field.

Boggs is investigating the incident.
