A Sunshine boy has discovered a fun way to make the holiday season more enjoyable.
Nick Hensley, 6, enjoys doing most of all the family baking during the holidays.
He began this hobby when he was just 3, and his love of cooking has since become a family tradition. He started out by watching his mom and dad bake.
"I like to bake because it gives me a chance to create something special," Hensley said. "You can make whatever you want and you don't have to worry about what anyone says about it."
Hensley also said that another great thing about his hobby is that it provides him with special "family time" with his parents.
Although he loves baking cookies, cakes, cupcakes, brownies and pies, he said his favorite baking project would have to be helping his dad prepare an old family recipe that is known as "Granny Hensley's yeast rolls."
"This is rather time-consuming, but Nick really enjoys helping with the rolls," Hensley's mother, Elizabeth Hensley, said. "He just loves baking in general. He enjoys getting the flour all over his face and just being able to work on a project and being able to make a mess."
His mother said he got into a college project with his older brother a couple of weeks ago that required some baking.
"He really got into that, now. That was right up his alley," she said.
Hensley usually gives his baked goods out for gifts to friends and family during the holidays. But he said his favorite part was being able to eat his projects.
"He used to give all the neighbors a treat every year, but with so many them having moved away, he now just hands his projects out to family," his mother said. "Everyone looks forward to this time of year because they know they will be getting one of Nick's famous creations."
