He began his teaching career with the Kentucky Department of Education at Bell County Vocational School, teaching industrial electricity and lineman's training. Later he transferred to Harlan State Vocational School where he taught drafting.
Haight also served as VICA and jobs placement coordinator. He received an Associate of Arts Degree from the University of Kentucky and retired having taught for 20 years in Vocational Education.
He served as Civil Defense Director for Harlan County and later as DES Director for Lee County, Virginia. Haight was a past member of the Harlan City Fire Department, Pennington Gap Fire Department and the Lee County Rescue Squad. He was a past member and president of the Loyall Kiwanis Club, a member of the Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels, a Master Mason and life member of the Grand Lodge of Kentucky #930, and a life member of the VFW Post 10298.
Haight was a member of the First Baptist Church of Pennington Gap. He was an avid sportsman, who loved hunting, fishing, boating, bowling and sports in general.
He was a WWII veteran who served as a Chief Petty Officer with the Coast Guard.
He was preceded in death by his father, Myron B. Haight; and his mother, Evelyn K. Haight.
Survivors include his wife, Lena Shuler Haight, Pennington Gap; one son, William M. Haight Jr. and wife, Vanessa; two grandchildren: Elizabeth Nicole Goad and husband, Tim; and Kelly Haight, all of Bowling Green; one sister, Evelyn Kluge and husband Robert, Elkhart, Ind.; two sisters-in-law: Ruby Salyers and husband, John, Wise, Va.; and Linda Shuler Lucas, Pennington Gap.
Visitation will be held Monday from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the First Baptist Church of Pennington Gap.
Funeral services will be conducted immediately following visitation with burial at Lee Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Matt Mitchell officiating.
Military graveside services will be conducted by the Charles DeWitt Byrd VFW Post 3382 of Kingsport, Tenn.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the First Baptist Church of Pennington Gap.
