Tom Shackleford Sr., 84, Evarts, died Jan. 12, 2006.

He was a retired coal miner with 40 years of service with Shackleford Coal Company. He was a former city councilman and mayor of Evarts. He was also a member of Yocum Lodge 897 in Evarts and was Boy Scouts of America Troop 509 commissioner. Shackleford was a member of the Christian Fellowship Church.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Eva Kirk Shackleford; his father, Nathan Shackleford; three children: Tommy Shackleford Jr., Tim Shackleford and Patsy Joyce Shackleford; two great-grandchildren: John Evan Fortner and Braelyn LeAnn Fortner; and six brothers: Henry, Byrd, Homer, Charles, Alonzo and Sam Shackleford.

Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Helen Lee Toney Shackleford, Evarts; three children: Alice Marie Shackleford Fortner and husband, Johnny, Keokee; Tommy Shackleford II and wife, Tina; and Henry Lee Shackleford and wife, Shelly, all of Evarts; a daughter-in-law, Euna Shackleford, Loyall; a sister, Eva Wildish, Missouri; 13 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.

Visitation will be held today from 6 to 8 p.m. at Evarts Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be conducted today at 8 p.m. with the Rev. Ernie Cox and the Rev. Danny McCreary officiating.

Burial will be Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Evarts Memorial Gardens.

Denver Turner, Buddy Simpson, Harold Link, Brandon Shackleford, Joshua Shackleford and Danny McCreary will serve as pallbearers.

Evarts Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
