A three-vehicle crash involving an 18-wheeler on the U.S. 421 bypass Wednesday had early morning rush hour traffic stalled for approximately two hours.

Harlan City Police Officer Josh Howard said it was unbelievable that no one was injured and added it was complete chaos with people trying to get to work and traffic backed up for miles.

Howard said the bitter temperatures outside added to the problem, which could be blamed for the crash due to bridges and highway being frozen over.

According to Howard, Aimee Cupp Shelton, 29, of Cumberland, was driving a 2004 Chevrolet Suburban south on the bypass, when she apparently hit some ice on the bridge.

"Her vehicle began spinning out of control, jumped the median and hit the side of the bridge in the northbound lane," said Howard.

Howard said Shelton's vehicle continued out of control and came in contact with two other vehicles, one of which was a tractor-trailer.

James Brock, 32, of Cawood, was driving a 1997 Kenworth 18-wheeler. It is owned by D&M Trucking Company, of Cawood.

The other vehicle involved was driven by Allan Middleton, 45, of Baxter. He was driving a 2002 Land Rover.

Brock and Middleton were traveling north on the U.S. 421 bypass at the time of the crash.

"After Shelton's vehicle struck the bridge and was out of control, her vehicle struck the Brock and Middleton vehicles in the northbound lanes," said Howard.

Shelton's vehicle sustained major damage to the front of the vehicle and minor damage to the rear.

The tractor and trailer sustained major damage to the passenger side of the vehicle.

Middleton's vehicle sustained minor damage to the driver side rear area of the vehicle.

Howard said Harlan EMS and LifeCare Ambulance Service responded to the scene of the accident. The drivers of the vehicles were checked out at the scene. No one was transported to the emergency room.

Howard said the accident remains under investigation. He was assisted at the scene by officer Scott Bailey and Sgt. Frank Doan of the Harlan Police Department.
