Rowland E. “Smokey” Smith, 76, Clospint, died August 11, 2005, at his home following a long illness.

A native of Highsplint, he had lived here all of his life. He was a retired coal miner having worked at Westmoreland Coal Company, a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, and a member of the Huff Settlement Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Pearl Vanwinkle Smith and George Smith; and a granddaughter, Sarah Jane Smith.

Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Georgia Short Smith, Clospint; two sons, William H. Smith and wife, Robin, Clinton, Tenn.; Keith Smith and wife, Rita, Baxter; a sister, Evelyn Smith, Cincinnati, Ohio; a brother, Elmer “Blue” Smith and wife, Rose, Harlan; five grandchildren: Nora E. Smith, William A. Smith and Daniel B. Smith, Clinton, Tenn.; Rachel Parker and husband, Ben, Iowa; and Victoria Smith, Baxter.

Visitation was Sunday at Evarts Funeral Home.

Funeral services were Sunday at the funeral home with the Rev. Butch Clem officiating.

Burial will be Monday at 11 a.m. at the Resthaven Cemetery with military rites to be performed by the Harlan Honor Guard.

Pallbearers will be Tim Middleton, Chris Peace, Rob Burgan, Charles Caudill, George E. Smith, Ken Cloud, Jimmy Blevins and Jerry Wynn.

Evarts Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
