Skins suffer first setback

The Cumberland Redskins suffered their first defeat of the summer Friday, falling to Scott County 97-72 in their final pool game at the state AAU tournament in Lexington.

The Redskins grabbed the No. 2 seed in their pool. They will open tournament play today against Harrison County at 1:30 p.m. at the Kentucky Basketball Academy.

Harlan also earned a second seed by defeating Elliott County 80-65 on Friday. John Smith poured in 44 points in the win.

The Dragons will face Louisville Western today at noon in the tournament. Harlan will play without Smith, who suffered a minor ankle injury Friday.

The Cawood Trojans won their final pool game before being bumped in the first round of the tournament Friday.

Cawood defeated Buckhorn 51-45. The Trojans fell to Elliott County 67-53 in Friday's only tournament game.

Lady Dragons win in OT

The Harlan Lady Dragons won a pair of thrillers Friday at Berea.

Courtney Bell poured in 25 points and grabbed 20 rebounds as the Lady Dragons slipped past Franklin County 45-38 in overtime.

Harlan's second game was even more dramatic. The Lady Dragons rallied from a five-point deficit in the final 10 seconds of the first overtime and beat Berea 55-48 in two overtimes. Caroline Huff scored 14 points in the game.

The Lady Dragons fell to Madison Southern 49-29 in their final game Friday.

Harlan returns to action with three more games at Berea today. The Lady Dragons will face Elizabethtown, Lexington Dunbar and Wayne County.

Evarts wins 4 at LMU

The Evarts Lady Cats went 4-4 at a recent camp at Lincoln Memorial University, capping a 7-7 performance for the summer.

The Lady Cats defeated Union County, Tenn., 44-31 on Monday and fell to Corbin 42-34. Evarts trailed the Lady Hounds 29-7 at halftime.

The Lady Cats lost to eventual camp champion Cocke County, Tenn., 41-34 on Tuesday and slipped past Thomas Walker, Va., 44-43.

On Wednesday, Evarts defeated Hancock County, Tenn., 43-38 and fell to Harlan 38-16.

The Lady Cats lost to Cherokee, Tenn., 43-41 on Thursday before closing the camp with a 39-22 win over J. Frank White, Tenn.
