A native of Watts Creek, he was a retired coal miner. He was a member and former pastor of the Four Mile Baptist Church. He was a Baptist preacher for 56 years and pastored nine churches.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Bradley and Elizabeth Gross; three brothers: John, Cecil and Hubert Gross; three sisters: Mahala Sullivan, Della and Troy Gross; three children: Edna Faye, Jimmy and Alonzo Gross; one daughter-in-law, Joan Gross; and a great-grandson, James Eric Stevens Jr.
Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Maxine Gross, Wallins; two brothers: Ken Gross, Wallins; and Raymond Gross, Columbus, Mississippi; two daughters: Betty Stevens and husband, Elmer, Wallins; and Debra Smith and husband, the Rev. Don Smith, Loyall; five sons: Charles Gross and wife, Ora Jean, Cawood; Bill Gross and wife, Darlene, Somerset; Frank Gross and wife, Sandy, Mary Alice; the Rev. Edmond Gross and wife, Robin, Wallins; and Michael Gross and wife, Georgetta, Wallins; 19 grandchildren, 43 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild, nine step-grandchildren and a special niece, Joyce Evans and husband, Jerry.
Visitation is today and Wednesday at 6 p.m. at the Four Mile Baptist Church at Keith.
Funeral services will be conducted Thursday at 2 p.m. at the church with the Rev. Freeman Clark and the Rev. George Fredrick officiating.
Burial will follow at the New Creech Cemetery at Wallins.
Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.
