After trailing for much of the game, Rosspoint scored the final four points Thursday to capture the county fifth- and sixth-grade championship with a 22-19 victory over Wallins at Cawood High School.

Emily Phillips powered Rosspoint (14-5) with 14 points and 12 rebounds.

Lauren Lee led Wallins (10-9) with nine points.

Rosspoint's Kaitlin Napier scored the first two points of the game before the Lady Devils got two baskets from Lee and a jumper by Jesslyn Baird to take a 6-2 advantage at the 2:37 mark. A layup by Phillips cut the deficit to two after one quarter.

The Lady Cats committed eight turnovers in the first period. Wallins missed 10 of its first 13 shots.

A steal and layup by Phillips with 5:11 left in the first half tied the game at 6-6.

Lee nailed a 3-pointer and Renishia Gilpin added a basket to give Wallins an 11-6 lead with 4:20 left in the quarter. Napier hit one of four free throws and Madison Cornett had a basket as the Lady Cats pulled within 11-9 at halftime.

The Lady Devils shot 19 percent (five of 27) from the field in the first half. Rosspoint hit 29 percent (four of 14) but missed five of six free throws.

“They played us very well defensively and took us out of our game in the first half,” Rosspoint coach Jeff Branson said. “Their good defense had a lot do to with that. They're a tough team, and they have nothing to hang their heads about.”

A layup by Cornett tied the game at 11-11 at the 5:28 mark. Baskets by Lee and Chyanna Harris pushed the lead to 17-13 after the third quarter.

Rosspoint missed 13 of its 14 field goal attempts in the third quarter while the Lady Devils hit three of 10 shots. Both teams had eight turnovers in the period.

Alishia Gilpin's basket with 3:58 to play gave Wallins a 19-15 advantage. It was the Lady Devils' last points of the game.

Phillips made three of six free throws and added two basket as the Lady Cats scored the game's final seven points.

“We wanted to wait until the fourth quarter to put our press on, and we knew the pressure would get to them,” said Branson. “We forced some turnovers and made some layups.”

Rosspoint made eight of 48 shots for 17 percent while the Lady Devils shot 19 percent (nine of 47).

“We missed a lot of shots, but in the long run we ended up hitting our free throws when it counted,” said Branson.

“We played a good game and the girls played hard. We didn't win a game last year, and I'm proud of them,” Wallins coach Patti Niday said. “I'm happy with second place. If we couldn't have won it, I'd rather see them win.”

Rosspoint outrebounded the Lady Devils 38-31. Kelsey Branson grabbed 10 rebounds for the Lady Cats. Cornett added nine boards. Renishia Gilpin led Wallins with 12.

“I'd like to thank the school, all of my coaches and God for placing me in the situation I'm in,” added Branson.

The win was Rosspoint's first county championship since 1991.
