Harlan fell behind early, then reeled off four unanswered touchdowns on the way to a 62-20 victory Friday over visiting Pineville to set up a showdown at Somerset on Friday for the regular season district championship.

Junior quarterback Chase Jones completed 10 of 15 passes for 205 yards and six touchdowns to lead the Harlan offense.

“He had a good night. He got a little rattled there late in the first half and early in the second half,” Harlan coach J.B. Donahue said of Jones. “He made some good throws tonight. The passing game worked really well, and I think Casey (Belcher) and Jon (Lundy) did a good job taking what was there tonight.”

Lundy carried the ball 12 times for 133 yards, and Belcher added 79 yards on 15 carries as Harlan rolled up 308 yards on the ground.

“Donahue's teams are always well-coached and good up front. They kind of wore us down by the second quarter. I think they're a heck of a football team,” Pineville coach Bart Elam said.

The Mountain Lions opened with a nine-play, 66-yards drive that culminated in a 30-yard TD run by senior quarterback Zac Churchwell, who completed three passes for 23 yards in the drive. Matt Combs added the extra point.

Josh Goodin took the kickoff and raced 42 yards to the Lions' 40. Jones connected with Will Pope for a touchdown pass on the next play. Michael Bianchi's kick tied the game at 7-7.

Harlan's Josh Johnson grabbed the first of six Churchwell interceptions at the 8:21 mark of the opening quarter and returned the ball to the Pineville 16. Jones found Pope for a 16-yard touchdown on the next play. Bianchi's kick made it 14-7 with 8:16 left.

After the Mountain Lions lost the ball on downs, Harlan went 64 yards in seven plays as Derek Sheffield caught a 8-yard pass from Jones at the 3:44 mark. Bianchi added the extra point.

Jones connected with Pope for a 41-yard touchdown with 1:03 left in the opening quarter. Bianchi's kick pushed the lead to 28-7.

Just 22 seconds later, Churchwell completed a 46-yard touchdown pass to T.J. Lord to cut the deficit to 28-13.

The Green Dragons responded with an impressive drive. After Belcher gained 27 yards, Jones found Lundy for a 22-yard touchdown pass on the first play of the second quarter.

The remainder of the half featured several turnovers. Sheffield and Lundy intercepted passes, and Combs recovered two Harlan fumbles.

“Defensively, we were not focused and had some breakdowns,” said Donahue. “We went flat after we exploded with the four scores.”

After a 41-yard run by Lundy, Jones connected with Patrick Ball for a 16-yard touchdown pass at the 5:07 mark of the third quarter.

On the kickoff return, Lord was hit by Ball, and Matt Lankford recovered a fumble. Five plays later, Belcher scored from the 4. Bianchi's kick made it 48-13 with 2:45 remaining in the third quarter.

Junior fullback Jonathan Heck carried the ball twice in the Dragons' next scoring drive, including a 29-yard TD run.

The Mountain Lions scored their last touchdown with four minutes left as backup quarterback John Stanley raced 30 yards.

Harlan (7-2 overall, 5-0 district) closed the scoring with 45 seconds to play as freshman running back Donavhen Middleton went in from the 8.

“We had a pleasant discussion at halftime, and we just needed some intensity,” said Donahue. “I felt like we had some upperclassmen and some seniors provide some intensity in the second half. Patrick had some big hits in the second half, and it was a great way to send these seniors out.”

Churchwell completed 11 of 31 passes for 124 yards and carried the ball 14 times for 54 yards.

“He's a big, strong kid. I think he made some bad decisions, but you can't fault him for the lack of effort. He throws it well and runs hard,” Elam said of Churchwell.

Ball and Johnson led the Harlan defense with seven tackles each. Stephenson and Lankford each had six tackles. Aaron Jones added five.

Pineville (0-5, 3-6) closes its season at home against Evarts on Friday.

“We've just got to keep plugging away, and I think Evarts is a very winnable game. I'd like to end the season the right way,” Elam said.

Harlan travels to Somerset on Friday.

“I think these kids are ready to answer the challenge, and I encourage everyone to get to Somerset,” Donahue said. “It's going to be a good one.”
