A native of Cawood, he was a retired coal miner, welder and attended Putney Missionary Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Aaron and Ellen Thomas; a grandson, Jimmy Lee Courtney; six sisters: Joannie Noe, Nannie North, Betty Denny, Gladys Grase, Delora Dotson and Frankie Garrett; five brothers: James, Ben, George, Ray Thomas and Bill Austin.
Survivors include his wife, Leoma Dean Thomas, Kitts; nine children: Janice Britt and husband, Troy, Louisville; Billie Street and husband, Edward, Louisville; Patrisha Stricklin, North Carolina; Betty Jo Thomas, North Carolina; Wesley Thomas and wife, Denise, Harlan; Robert Thomas and wife, Lisa, North Carolina; Lisa Barger and husband, Kenny, Harlan; Ralph Cloud and wife, Candice, Evarts; and Ray Thomas, Harlan; 18 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; four sisters: Faye Belcher, Dayhoit; Mary Brooks, Cleveland, Tenn.; Patsy Gailey, Pennington Gap, Va.; and Kyla Jones, Harlan; special nephews: Danny Hall and Bill Morgan; special niece, Cathy Clem; sisters-in-law: Joyce Thomas and Anna Ruth Austin; special friends: Pert King and Ken Grubbs; and several other relatives and friends.
Visitation is today from 6 to 9 p.m. at Mount Pleasant Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Mount Pleasant Funeral Home with the Rev. Joe Howard officiating.
Burial will follow in Day-Jackson Cemetery of Cranks.
