The Rosspoint academic team captured its fourth straight middle school regional Governor's Cup competition with a victory last week at Cumberland Elementary School.

Winning four of eight categories, Rosspoint finished in Region 21 with 33 points. Page placed second with 23.5 points, followed by Harlan with 17.5 points, Evarts with 15.5 points, Yellow Creek with 14.5 points, Middlesboro with 10 points, Hall and Right Fork with 3.5 points each, Wallins with two points and Cumberland with one. Lone Jack and Black Mountain also competed.

The Rosspoint quick recall team placed first, followed by Page, Harlan and Cumberland. Members of the Rosspoint quick recall team are Josh Madison (captain), Nick Cox, Cassidy Ball, Tucker Lewis, Josh Wynn, Aaron Slusher, Corey Ross and Coty Caldwell.

The Yellow Creek future problem-solving team was first, followed by Evarts, Rosspoint and Wallins.

Rosspoint coach Janie Torstrick commended her team for remaining focused, committed and for going "beyond what is required in the regular classroom."

"They're successful because they're willing to put the extra time in that it requires to be successful. It takes hours and hours of practice, and they have to be willing to put that extra time in if they want to do well," Torstrick said.

She also attributed the team's success to the educators at Rosspoint.

"The students have to come to me with the basics in each core content area. A lot of the success, the teachers share in that as well," she said.

The state Governor's Cup competition will be held March 17-19 in Louisville with the top five finishers in each category advancing, along with members of the top two teams in quick recall and future problem-solving.
