Kerensa Dawn Helton, 36, of Cranks, sustained fatal injuries in the crash. She reportedly died at the scene.
All three vehicles involved in the crash were driven by people from Harlan County.
According to Virginia State Police trooper Kelly Harvel, the crash occurred around 7:15 p.m. approximately one mile from the Kentucky-Virginia border on U.S. 421.
Helton was reportedly operating a 1996 Chevrolet Corsica and traveling north on U.S. 421 when her vehicle collided with a 1995 Pontiac Sunfire driven by Jessica H. Witt, 20, of Cawood, who was traveling south.
Harvel said the collision occurred at the intersection of route 746 and U.S. 421.
Also involved in the crash was Steven L. Brock, 23, of Cawood. He was driving a 2004 Ford Mustang and traveling south on U.S. 421 behind the Witt vehicle.
It was reported that when the Helton and Witt vehicles collided, the Brock vehicle also made contact.
Witt sustained multiple injuries in the crash and was transported to Lee Regional Medical Center in Pennington Gap, Va., to be treated. She was listed in stable condition.
It was reported that Brock was not injured in the crash. The Helton and Witt vehicles sustained severe damage and had to be hauled away on rollback wreckers.
Harvel said due to the crash involving a fatality, Virginia State Police reconstructionist J.P. Flanary was called to the scene to investigate the incident.
The area of U.S. 421 where the crash occurred was closed for several hours.
Harvel said the cause of the crash has not been determined. He said the incident remains under investigation.
