He was born July 27, 1921, in Leslie County. Mr. Lewis was a World War II veteran and a disabled coal miner for Blue Diamond Coal Company. He was the owner and operator of The Lewis Mountain Museum and was a member of the Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonel. He served for many years as a Kentucky Farm Bureau Board Member. Mr. Lewis was also an active member of the Pine Mountain Church of God, a well-known gardener and was known also as Santa Clause.
Mr. Lewis was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Lorene Lewis; his parents: Elhannon and Phronia Lewis; three brothers: Arch, Chad, Charlie and Horace; one sister, Grace; and one son-in-law, Carlyle Shepherd.
Mr. Lewis is survived by eight children: Bernice Reynolds and husband, Elmer, of Harlan; Betty Jo Shepherd, of Harlan; Julian Lewis and wife, Joanna, of Rutledge, Ga.; Barbara Parker and husband, Ronnie, of Evarts; Brenda McKenzie and husband, Jim, of Harlan; Bonnie Huff and husband, Roy Lee, of Harlan; Billie Hood and husband, Mike, of Lenore, NC; Bobby Lewis, of Harlan; three brothers: Covy, Daniel and Hobert; 14 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and a host of family and friends also survive.
Visitation will be held from Tuesday, May 29, 2007 from 5 to 9 p.m. at the chapel of Mount Pleasant Funeral Home.
Funeral services for Mr. Lewis will be conducted Wednesday, May 30, 2007 at 1 p.m. at the Pine Mountain Church of God with the Rev. Kermit Creech officiating.
Burial will follow in the Big Laurel Cemetery in Big Laurel.
Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
