Scott Farley, a captain in the U.S. Army who serves as a Med Evac helicopter pilot, met his fianc/e, Natalie Skates, an Army nurse, while stationed together at Fort Polk, La. Since then, they've both been deployed on a tour of duty in Baghdad and have just recently returned to the states.
And they're also wanting to get married.
The couple entered a "Wedding Day Giveaway" competition hosted by a Fairbanks, Alaska, news station, and they have been narrowed down as the station's top three finalists. Farley is currently stationed at Fort Wainright in Fairbanks, and Skates, who is in San Antonio, will soon be transferred there.
The stories of the three finalists were aired on Webcenter 11 News Friday night, and that's when the voting began, too. People have until 4 a.m. on June 22 to e-mail their votes to determine which couple should receive the lavish wedding day giveaway.
Farley wants Harlan Countians to log onto the Alaska news station's Web site (www.webcenter11.com) and to start flooding the agency with their votes.
"He's a hometown boy, and he's served his country well," she said. "We should all be getting behind him on this, and helping him and his fianc/e be able to have a special day. They both deserve it so much."
When in Baghdad, Scott and Natalie were featured on a CNN special called "Combat Hospital." The documentary told of how the couple endured the warfront together.
"They didn't have time to be together that much," said Corrine Farley. "When he would drop off patients to her, sometimes he would sneak her a quick kiss, then he would have to be off again.
They've given so much of themselves in service for their country, and now I think it's time for them to be able to enjoy each other for a while.
"I hope Scott's hometown can make that happen for them. I think many people here know him. He used to work at Lewis Flowers, with the Community Action Agency and was actively involved with the ROTC program."
People can vote as many times as they would like, and the Web site will allow votes to be made every 20 minutes.
If Scott and Natalie are named the winners, the majority of their wedding expenses will be paid. Their wedding is scheduled to take place during the Alaskan summer, sometime in August.
