Female members of the Harlan County Detention Center's Work Release Program have been helping at the Harlan Animal Shelter.

According to Harlan Animal Shelter employee Barbra Lewis, there are usually two to three workers helping with the dogs. Their duties include the daily cleaning of the kennels, washing the bowls, feeding the dogs and occasionally bathing the dogs. The shelter currently has around 100 dogs.

Lewis said they usually keep one to two workers in the cat room. Their duties include feeding, cleaning cages and general care of the animals.

One of the most important rooms is the puppy room. The shelter keeps two of the workers in this room. Due to the young age of the animals, they require special attention.

The other duties of the inmates include laundry, cleaning and the general care of the facility.

"We're glad to provide help at the animal shelter. We want to utilize the work release program where it's needed in the county," said Harlan County Jailer Curt Stallard.

Lewis said the women are a tremendous help and do a great job in assisting with the day to day operations of the facility.

Taking care of these animals is a very important job, and Lewis said that every effort is made to keep the animals in a friendly, sheltered environment so they can be adopted to a good home.

Lewis said there are a lot of great animals at the shelter who are very friendly and are just looking for a good home. She encourages everyone who is interested to come by and see for themselves.
