He was a retired coal miner with over 20 years of service and was retired from the U.S. Air Force with 20 years. He was a member of the Hemphill Baptist Church and a member of the V.F.W. Post 11139. Mr. Sturgill was also a certified electrician and a certified airplane mechanic.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Garnell Ruth Sturgill; his parents, Leon Bartley Sturgill and Viva Melinda Bolling; one brother, Wayne (Joe) Sturgill and one great-grandchild, Dyana Nicole Arnold.
He is survived by six children: Dana Chasteen and husband, Nick, Harlan; Rita Jeanette Sturgill, Fairborn, Ohio; Lewis Bates and wife, Emily, Pound, Va.; Ronald Bates and wife, Peggy, Big Stone Gap, Va.; Kathy Bolling and Stephanie Fox, both of Kansas; one sister, Frances Sturgill Day, Kings Creek; 10 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; also surviving is a special aunt, Marie Bolling; and many friends and other family members.
Visitation will be after 5 p.m. Tuesday at the Hemphill Baptist Church.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2008 at the Hemphill Baptist Church with the Rev. Danny Hurst officiating.
Burial will be in the Bolling Cemetery in Flat Gap, Va.
Military rites will be provided by the Harlan Honor Guard.
Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
