The Cawood Trojans’ recent upswing finally paid off in the win column as they defeated host Lee, Va., 7-5 in 10 innings Wednesday.

The Trojans went into the game with a seven-game losing streak, but the last two of those losses were by two runs at Whitley County and by one run at Harlan.

Cawood (5-17) pounded out 13 hits against the Generals, led by three singles and a double by senior Brandon Ray. Blake Turner doubled twice and singled, and T.J. Green added a double and a single. Greg York, Anthony McMillian, Phillip Maggard and Chase Niday each singled once.

Cawood coach Eugene Farmer said several players had big nights for the Trojans.

“The bottom of our lineup was fabulous tonight,” he said. “I feel like we’re turning a corner.”

Turner started on the mound and went seven innings, giving up five runs on eight hits while walking eight and striking out five. Niday (1-4) finished the game with three hitless innings, striking out one and walking two to earn his first win of the season.

“Blake and Chase were both really good tonight,” Farmer said. “I’m thrilled with their performance.”

The Trojans return to action tonight at Pineville.
