The rubber duck race is making a comeback at the Sunshine Volunteer Fire Department.

Ashley Hatfield, the public relations officer for the fire department, said she hopes to continue on the event’s past success.

“We haven’t had the duck race in two years now. But we have had several before and have had really good turnouts,” Hatfield said.

She said the event will help to pay for the department’s new fire engine and tanker truck and the purchase of vital equipment for the firefighters.

“The fire departments need a lot of help, especially these days. We encourage everyone to support their local fire department,” Hatfield said. “The purchase of a breathing apparatus is our next main goal. They are a vital piece of equipment.”

Hatfield said the duck races are always fun.

“It is a pretty fun-filled day,” she said. “A lot of people passing by get a kick out of watching us.”

This year’s duck race is scheduled for Sept. 6 at 2 p.m. at the Baxter tunnels.

Prizes will be given to the first five ducks that cross the finish line, with $500 awarded to the first-place duck. The winning sponsors do not have to be present during the event.

Anyone interested in sponsoring a duck in this year’s race should call Hatfield at 909-2138 or contact any member of the Sunshine Fire Department. Tickets are $5 per duck.

“I would like to encourage everyone to come out,” Hatfield said.

Hatfield added the department could also use a few new members. Anyone interested in joining the Sunshine Volunteer Fire Department should visit the department’s fire station at the old armory building in Sunshine on Tuesdays at 7 p.m.
