The Harlan County Knights sixth-grade AAU team improved to 22-0 and captured their third tournament title with a win at the BCI Super Showcase at the Knott County Sportsplex over the weekend.

The Knights edged Elliot County 59-57 in the tournament finals. Tyrese Simmons poured in 24 points, including a buzzer-beating layup to lift Harlan County to the win.

Harlan County defeated Hurley and Elliot County in the first round, before knocking off Hurley again in the semifinals.

The Harlan Lady Dragons edged Leslie County 46-43 Sunday to capture the ninth-grade division of the BCI Super Showacase at the Knott County Sportsplex.

Shanae Thomas, an eighth-grade guard, hit the game-winning 3-pointer after Leslie County had wiped out a six-point deficit in the final minute. Thomas finished with 21 points to lead the Lady Dragons.

“She was on fire,” King said.

Torri Mitchell added 10 points. Kaitlin Jenkins scored eight. Katie King tossed in five. Emma Bianchi added two.

Katie Moore, one of the top players in the 14th Region, scored 24 to lead Leslie County

Moore scored 28 and Madison Combs added 17 in a 51-40 win to conclude pool play.

Jenkins scored 13 and Mitchell and Thomas each added 10 to pace Harlan, which won both of its games Saturday. Bianchi added four. Charles scored two. King added one.
