Black Bears claim weightlifting title

Harlan County captured another weightlifting meet championship, overpowering the competition Saturday at Lynn Camp High School. The Bears’ total of 162 points was more than the other teams combined. North Laurel was second with 82 points and Whitley County was third with 56.

First-place finishers for the Bears included Kelin Gist, Treyvon Long, Chris Clem, Justin Napier, Devin Daniels, Kainer Caudill, Jake Middleton, Carson Whitehead and Tucker Lewis.
Second-place finishers included Cory Chorak, Coty Miracle and J.W. Cooper.
Third-place finishers were Adam Clem, Devin Curry, Bobby Huff, Austin Maggard, Aaron Mefford, William Banks, Zack Caldwell and Tyler Ely.
Fourth-place finishers were Hunter Lewis, Mark Messer and Brian Whitaker.
Fifth-place finishers included Ryan Dempsey, Ryan Slusher and Justin Hensley.
The best bench press was turned in by Harlan County’s Tucker Lewis. Harlan County’s Carson Whitehead had the best power clean. Lynn Camp’s Austin Hall had the best squad.
The overall winner in the heavyweight division was Whitehead. Michael Nelson of North Laurel was the middleweight champion. Josh Velasco of North Laurel was the lightweight champion.
Top middle school lifters in their respective classes from Harlan County included Kelin Gist, Caleb Saylor, Jordan Massengale and James Kelly.
