Harlan County High School sophomore Taylor Howard has been selected to the Kentucky Center Governor’s School for the Arts to be held on the campus of Transylvania University in Lexington from June 17 through July 7.

During the three-week session, she will join 224 other talented young Kentuckians to receive intensive daily instruction in her art form from gifted faculty, attend master classes, workshops and performances and participate in exciting field trips and special arts events. There were 1,750 students from across the state who applied for this intensive program.

Attending GSA is a very high honor, requiring commitment and full participation.

Howard is a member of the Harlan County High School Drama program.

“I am so proud of Taylor,” said Harlan County High Drama Teacher Pam Hoskins. “It is an exceptional list to be chosen for, especially as a sophomore. Miss Howard is an encouragement to other students, as we at HCHS look forward to seeing her shine in this opportunity.”

Howard is the 16-year-old daughter of Daniel and Tammy Howard, of Evarts.

“I love all aspects of performing,” notes Howard. My parents encourage me in my goals in every way possible. I have two siblings, Justin and Jessica. Justin would be the one to put me in my first performing arts class, with Mrs. Hoskins.”

“Ever since I can remember, I have wanted to be ‘famous’ or a ‘star.’ Being a star in my eyes is a person who succeeds at what they love to do. I wish to succeed in performing arts, whether it be in theatre performing with live audiences or small television parts where there are more than one take. I don’t prefer, I just want to act.”

She has participated in the drama class in a variety of ways, including acting, poetry and stagecraft. Within the first two weeks of being enrolled in the class, Mrs. Hoskins threw me into a small part of an Indian in Peter Pan. I thought I could do a bigger part so I auditioned for Carlotta in our production of Phantom of the Opera. I was the only freshman to audition. I got the part.”

She has been recognized for her acting, receiving the “All Mountain” Award for her part of Carlotta.

Other parts have included Frau Mueller in “Frankenstein” and Mrs. Wheeler in “Twain Tales.”

She currently is preparing for Queen of Hearts in “Alice in Wonderland.”
